Hi guys! Apologies for my random absence. My computer decided to die on me so my internet habits have been limited to basically Facebooking on my phone. Boo. Naturally I have a maaaassive backlog of stuff to get to, so all your notes and things will be dealt with ASAP.

This also means I'm uber late with the monthly challenge. Since I haven't been able to give you guys as much notice with the theme as possible, this month we'll go for a more open theme: pet crafts. I want you guys to show us all the craft you consider your pet, or best, craft. Show off the craft with a piece that exemplifies your medium!

Theme
The theme for September is "Pet Crafts".

The challenge will run from September 1st and 30th.

Prizes
Two winners will receive a 3 month premium membership and 500 Points.

Gallery Descriptions

Here's the second instalment of our gallery descriptions for the Artisan Crafts galleries.

Jewelry

This is the gallery for all those ornamental crafts. This gallery is one of our largest galleries and boasts and incredible variety or work, from paper jewely right through to metalsmithed. Jewelry may be anything from a single hand made bead to a complete set. There are 8 major sub-categories: Beads & Charms, Bracelets & Anklets, Earring & Piercings, Headpieces & Hair Accessories, Necklaces & Pendants, Pins & Brooches, Rings, and Sets,

Leatherwork

Leatherwork encompasses both crafts made from real animal hide and faux leather. You will find a lot of armour pieces amongst these galleries, as well as jewellery and other accessories. Most of the leatherwork is intended to be wearable, but some is ornamental. This is also where you will find the taxidermy sub-gallery.

Metal Work

Anything made from metal lives here. Metal work typically involves the shaping of metal using heat, but there are also plenty of examples of products made without it. There's a lot of armour pieces here, too, many of which compliment the leatherworked crafts. There are also many weapons, both real and ornamental, as well as tamer blades and eating irons. Alongside these you'll also find an incredible array of ornamental works.

Miniatures

The minatures gallery is our equal largest gallery, alongside jewelry. This gallery predominantly features clay work, but miniatures may be of any medium. As the name suggests, the gallery is for things crafted in a tiny scale relative to actual size. Some crafts are intended for doll houses or props for toys, where others are just made because making mini stuff is so cool. Wearable miniatures, particularly in the form of jewelry, are also very common. The 8 major sub-categories are: Animals, Nature & Scenery, Dollhouses & Rooms, Fan Art, Fantasy, Food, Household Items, Jewelry, and People.

Needlework

Needlework is the place for any of the stitched pieces. This may be using an actual needle or done by hand stitching. Crochet and Knitting belong here, as does cross stitch and any other form of embroidery.

Other

The 'other' gallery is for any craft a deviant feels is not at home among the other galleries.

Textiles

Textiles, simply put, are crafts made with fabric and/or cloth. Items in this gallery are often wearable items, such as clothing, footwear, bags or accessories. The textile can be made from scratch (i.e., knitted), or sewn from purchased material. This gallery also encompasses Fibre Art. This may include fibre that has been painted or stitched on, or the art may be the very fabric itself as seen in tapestries and will hangings. This gallery is also home to quilting.

Woodworking

Last by not least we have our woodworking gallery. Crafts here are created using wood as a medium through various methods. This includes turning, carving, carpentry, cabinetry, marquetry (application of veneer to create a pattern), Pyrography (wood burning) and so forth. There are many pieces of skilfully made usable furniture in this gallery, alongside gorgeous works produced for aesthetic appeal only.

Gallery Descriptions

The Artisan Crafts galleries boast an incredible array of diversity. You'll find everything from incredible sculptures to elegant jewellery, clay food that looks real enough to eat next to food art that looks so realistic you won't believe it's edible. There are a lot of hidden niches among the galleries, so lets explore them all.

Anthro

The anthro gallery is dedicated to crafts that depict animals with human-like features. You'll find lots of fursuits in this gallery, alongside anthro masks and props and accessories to match.

Architectural Models

The little gallery is home to all the physical architectural models and constructs. It's home to a lot of miniaturised versions of buildings, from the hyper-realistic to the whimsical and fantastical. Among them are often models for unique furniture designs as well. Less often, you'll come across life-sized architectural contracts, which can be anything from a patio to a complete building.

Basketry and Weavings

All things weaved live here. This gallery encompasses every form of weaving, whether by hand or on a loom. It could be a basket weaved from wire, or a bracelet knotted from thread. Note; this gallery does not include knitting, crochet, or other types of needlework. They belong in needlecraft or textiles, as we'll see later.

Ceramics, Pottery and Clay

These galleries are for the ceramic arts, including earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. Non-ceramic clay work is often found in these galleries due to the accessibility of air-dry clays. The gallery is broken up into three major sub-galleries; Ornaments & Objects, Pots & Vases, and Tableware.

Costumery

This gallery is where you'll find all the amazing cosplay dA has to offer. And while that is a large portion of these galleries, there are also many skilled costumes of varying types. In particular, Period & Historical costumes are abundant, as well as many other character and theme costumes that are not intended for role play. Next to these amazing costumes there are also plenty of masks, props and accessories to be found.

Culinary Arts

Our only edible gallery in Artisan Crafts is right here. In it you will find everything from a lavish breakfast to edible sculptures the defy belief. The galleries are divided up into 4 major categories: Desserts, Food Art, Main Dishes, and Pumpkin Carving.

Dolls, Plushies and Custom Toys

This gallery houses an incredible diversity of toys and dolls. You'll find incredible fan art alongside astonishing OCs. Here we have 4 main categories. Amigurumi is home to all the small soft 3D toys made by kiotting or crocheting. Customised Toys are bough dolls that have been transformed. It largely features doll repaints and altered MLPs, but there's a lot of other customisations to be found here as well. Original Artist Dolls is for any doll made completely from scratch, from the conception of the character to the realisation of it. And lastly the Plushies sub gallery is for all those 3D toys stitched from textiles and stuffed. They typically do not have armature or ball joints as seen in many of the other sub galleries.

Folding and Papercraft

The folding and Papercraft galleries encompass everything that is to do with paper. This may be making an entire book from scratch, or folding bits of paper to make an origami object. Cubecrafts and Papercraft Models also belong here, as do Papercutting and Scherenschnitte. There are many other kinds of papercrafts that are not larger enough to warrant their of sub-gallery (e.g., quilling, cardmaking, etc) but can often be found throughout.

My name's Rhiannon. I'm a 25-year-old Aussie chick who is crazy about animals. I have a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Zoology and History & Philosophy of Science and have recently finished my Master of Science (Zoology). Next year I'll begin a PhD in Zoology. Ever since I was a toddler I knew I would dedicate my life to wildlife conservation, and through science I have found the tools I need to make a difference.

In my spare time, I love to create. I've always been drawn to artistic hobbies of every shape and colour, and each one of them consumes me for a time. As such, I'm a total jack of all trades, master of none. I spread myself too thin to be able to ever become amazing at any one of them, but I'm having so much fun drinking it all in.

The thing I suppose I'm known for the most is baking. I started dabbling in cake decorating three years ago and fell in love. My partner convinced me to start posting photos online and I began to find that people wanted to see more. After numerous requests for a food blog, Cakecrumbs was finally born. I've no idea where this crazy food journey will end, but the ride is amazing.

  • Only send your suggestion to one Community Volunteer.
