Cook Book Challenge: Week 38 by cakecrumbs Cook Book Challenge: Week 38 by cakecrumbs
The book for this weeks challenge was "Cadbury Chocolate Cookbook". It didn't have much to offer in the way of a challenge, until I saw the roulade. I've made a pavlova roulade before, but never any cake version of it. I've always been intimidated by scroll cakes. They seem so delicate, so easy to tear, and few come out looking like a perfect scroll. I couldn't chicken out though. That's not in the spirit of the challenge!

This one is a French Chocolate Roulade. It's a light chocolate sponge, coated with a layer of chocolate and filled with cream. I decorated the exterior with icing sugar.

My sister makes a lot of these kinds of cakes, and although I don't participate in the baking and rolling itself, I can agree that it's pretty challenging to make this. :/ She's made it so many times, but really only one turned out majorly successful.

Oooh, YUM!

That looks incredibly delicious.
It's too bad I can't eat chocolate - allergic to it.
But it looks amazing.

Well, it's been 20 years since I last ate chocolate,
so I don't miss it very much. There are a lot of delicious things left.

I have another allergy, that's more annoying - nuts.
Seems like there can be traces of nuts in anything lately.
You must've noticed that on a food package sometime, for sure.

And since my allergies are deadly, I can't risk anything.
That's the frustrating part.

But as I said - there are plenty of super yummy things left.
And art like yours is candy for the eyes, of course!

i got impatient, i didn't have enough eggs to make your roulade so i made a chocolate swiss roll, it tastes amazing but cracked badly when rolling the filling into it, ah well at least it tastes amazing compared to the last attempt!

The taste is all that counts! :la: I have to admit to seeing the amount of eggs the recipe used and thinking twice, before remembering that I had three cartons of eggs in the fridge. :giggle: Then I made it twice ugh. So. Many. Eggs.

Haha. Can never have too much butter in the fridge. It's terrible when you need it and find there's not enough.

I am forever running out of plain flour so went a little OTT and now have two bags of normal and two gluten free!

I am actually out of plain flour at the moment. It's something I usually have in abundance but I can't find another bad anywhere. It would probably help if I could fit everything in one pantry. :/

Oooooh! that looks so light and yummy! I've made a few roulades in my time, well in the dim and distant past if I'm honest lol- sweet ones using fat free sponge recipe - which almost always cracked and split when rolling them, and a yummy savoury one with spinach in the sponge and a filling of smoked salmon and cream cheese which was a tad more flexible.
Thank you for inspiring a little trip down memory lane for me  gonna go see if I can find that savoury roulade recipe in my old cookbooks so I can make it again!

Oooh yumyumyum! This comes just in time, after I couldn't deliver a birthday cake because the cream was gone off and I only realised after decorating. *le sigh* The ingredients for your version will be on my weekend shopping list. ;)

Ohh no! That's so frustrating. I've had a few occasions where the cream has gone off before the best before date. I swear the supermarkets don't refrigerate the stock properly sometimes.

There are so many different ways of making roulades (pavlova roulade is my favourite!). I've never seen a joconde roulade before but figured it could have awesome potential. That one you showed me is different, but the technique is similar.

I don't think I'm making any sense. It's 4am. I have a little excuse.
