Mother's Day: Baby Dragon Cake by cakecrumbs Mother's Day: Baby Dragon Cake by cakecrumbs
This was my very first attempt at a novelty cake, and the first dragon cake I ever did. There are three cakes: two red velvet cake half spheres for the egg, and one half sphere for the dragon's body. Cakes were layered and covered in buttercream, then covered in fondant.

I had HUGE dramas covering the eggs in fondant, hence how not neat they are. Learnt a lot of lessons doing this cake: but the redeeming feature was the face on the baby dragon. It saved this cake from being a total disaster.

Design is based from Debbie Brown.

Aww, he's - or is it a she..? - so sweet! :aww:

The results are after what seems to have been a traumatic ordeal :) How, might I ask, did you get the egg halves to stand up like that if they're cake-filled? Good thing you made oil-based red velvet instead of a rich chocolate cake else it would have been even more difficult!

Oh I guess it's a he? I don't think I thought about it haha.

I got them to stand by pressing down on them to create a flat base with the fondant. These days I would probably use royal icing to make it hold.

Thank you! From memory I'm pretty sure it was just fondant. I think only the body and eggs were filled with cake.
