Skyward Sword :: Furnix Cake by cakecrumbs Skyward Sword :: Furnix Cake by cakecrumbs
You guys. It's done. It's finally done. *collapses into a heap*

As stated in the WIP, this is for :icongame-art-hq:'s "Link's Blacklist: The Zelda Tribute". It's an art collab featuring 60 artists, each of whom creates fan art from Zelda. But the really cool and different thing about the project is that it's enemies only. The standard is amazing and you guys should go see it and love it and tell the artists how amazing they are. Even if you're not a fan of the series. Go go go: [link]

Now. I can't draw for nuts, so I turned to a medium I'm a bit more advanced in. This turned out to be the most ambitious, stressful, ridiculous cake I've ever done. I've gone into detail on the blog about half of the crap that went wrong with this cake, so I won't bore you with it.

Tech details: The cake + topper stands a total of just under 30cm high, and the Furnix topper has a wingspan of 24cm. Cake is butter cake that begins red at the base and gradually progresses to yellow at the top. Layered and covered with buttercream and then fondant ruffles. The Furnix topper is predominantly fondant. I used a wire frame to support the structure. All of the feathers on the cake were individually cut. I have no idea how long it took me all up, but for the topper alone it was about 5 full days of work. Not counting making the wire frame and repairing all the breakages, colouring the fondant, etc.

Lawd, this was a marathon. This cake took every ounce of patience I posses. I nearly gave up thrice. There are A LOT of things I'm not happy with and would like to have done better, but by the end I just wanted it to be over. I've used time I should have spent working on my thesis and will probably regret that. So. Yeah. Not perfect. But it'll do for now.

Bloggity with lots of ramblings, WIPs and a whole bunch of photos, including the failed ancient-cistern themed cake: [link]

Some other Zelda fan art:

ETA: Oh oh oh! I forgot to add in my sleepy delirium last night that, while I used a whole bunch of references from screen caps and Zelda dungeon and whatnot, I want to give special mention to this reference from fellow deviant ~ShrubbyNerb. Without it I'd not have been able to see certain angles of the Furnix so it was a huge help!

Jeez, this is amazing. You put a lot of detail into your work, going from the feathers to the end of the tail.
The wings are totally incredible, I don't even know how you could do them! I'd probably get pissed off and smash it the first hour I spent on it. I find it really creative how you did the base for it.
I am really astounded by the quality of this, really, my eyes widened when I first saw this. In my opinion, it really inspires people to be as bad ass at making these as you are. Its truly amazing what you do, and you should really feel proud of how much quality goes into your work.
