Spherical Concentric Layer Cake Tutorial by cakecrumbs Spherical Concentric Layer Cake Tutorial by cakecrumbs
This tute shows you how to achieve the concentrically layered cake spheres as seen in my Earth Cake and Jupiter Cake. It's the least equipment-heavy version of doing this.

This is my first video tute and it gave me hell. Making the video was fine, but then when I tried to export it WMM said 'no'. The end result is a bit choppier and not as well paced as the first version, but regardless I'd still love feedback from you guys on it as well. Let me know what you think of the video tutes -- do you prefer them to the photo and text-based tutes? Or should I stick to the old way of doing it?

Here's the blog post with video and tips on making this kind of cake: cakecrumbs.me/2013/08/01/spher…

To be honest I think you should do video tutorials as well as the text and picture ones.
Video works for these round cakes because it's a very tricky technique which is easily explained visually on video.
Making a standard cheese cake is pretty straight forward so no video is required just simple instructions.
I hope this helps!
I also wanted to ask where you get the sphere shaped trays?  I'm a hobby baker and want to make this for my 6 year old brother, he loves space and cake!

There are numerous cooking magazines and online culinary sources that might be able to help you. I usually recommend cookingchannel.com or foodnetwork.com if its the general technique you need and not a specific recipe. There are also books about unique cakes as well. I hope this helps.

You are really clever!! I love this idea so much :) As for the video, I thought it was very well done. My only gripe was the sound track repeating itself.

This is pure awesome! I have to try it. Don't think it'll look anywhere near as polished as your beautiful cakes, but combining science and cooking sounds like a really fun way to spend my weekend :D

I really enjoyed the video tutorial.  I personally like videos better than photo and text tutorials because video makes it easier to see exactly what's going on.  It's also great that you didn't just do a slideshow video.  A lot of people just do that and I silently rage that a photo and text version would be so much better.

You and your creations are awesome!  :squee:

awesome tut for baking it! do you happen o have one for decorating it? or no? cause if you did that would be nice to watch as well (and i didnt know it was that easy to make. here i was like @_@ only the rich and famous that have heavy duty things would be only able to do this. haha) that and i like your measuring cup. i saw it in the store the other day then thought against it cause i have like a bazillion of my moms... its nice to know though. cause my bro wanted an earth cake (i find it funny that you had already made one that aside, you did an awesome job on both of those cakes.) for his birthday. (the biggest part thats hard for me is the decorating and frosting it and all...)
