This is a cake I was commissioned to do for a 21st birthday surprise party. It's a cake meant to look like a wheel of swiss cheese. The happy birthday message is presented as the logo atop the wheel. The cake was only to be sitting atop a cake board decorated to look like a wooden cheese board, but as I got into it I wanted to add a little extra detail. Now, I spend a lot of time trying to make food into edible versions of inedible things. But turning sugar into edible versions of things that are already edible was definitely something unusual for me. I spent a lot of time wishing I could channel all the incredible skills of you food miniature clay artists into my work cause wow was it a learning curve.
The grapes were fairly easy. A simple shape that only required painting in different shades of reds and purples to give some depth. The crackers were a little trickier. I kept playing with ways of adding texture and colour until, on the third try, I started getting something I was a bit happier with.
The figs were a lot more difficult to paint and I spent a lot of time adding and removing colour to try and achieve something that looked fig-ish. The inside in particular didn’t become the perfect picture of stunning realism that I imagined in my head, but they hopefully ended up resembling the fruit enough to be distinguishable. Maybe if you squint a bit you can pretend it looks totally realistic.
