Juvenile Australian black-shouldered kite (Elanus axillaris).
Yesterday I was going for a bike ride with my husky and encountered this bird at the start of the track. I thought it was a nankeen kestrel at first glance, as I've seen them one suburb over before and they hunt identically, but soon realised it was too large and did not have the black bands on its tail. I have never seen one in the area before, and have never seen a raptor of any kind so close to my house.
By the time I got my camera out and got my boyfriend to take control of my dog, I only got about 10 seconds to get it in focus and fire off a few quick shots before it saw me and flew off. This is the best of a bunch of poor shots.
And a beautiful bird !
i love this so much
