Putting the 'Art' in Artisan :: CalabarteWhen it comes to the woodworking galleries, there is one artist I love to have a regular peek at: Calabarte's. These stunning creations are made from calabash, otherwise known as gourds. When the fruit dries out, it produces a wood-like substance without a grain, making it a perfect choice for many artistic endeavours. Calabarte uses this medium to create spectacular and intricate carvings that beg to be stared at. If the carvings aren't eye-catching enough in their own right, just have a loot at how they transform when lit. The gorgeous surfaces come alive with colour, highlighting every tiny detail. And if that's still not enough, look at the mesmerising way they transform the room around them. Here is just a small selection of the multi-dimensional beauties to be found in his gallery.
Putting the 'Art' in Artisan :: CakeUpStudioOften when I'm hunting for brand new artists to feature, simply giving a DD to one of their pieces just doesn't feel like enough. Some artists just have galleries full of the most skilled crafts I've ever seen and I want to give them all DDs. Constantly. For forever. Apparently I'm not allowed to do that. So I'm starting a brand new bi-weekly feature series instead. This one, instead of showing a range of artists, will focus on one artist and showcase some of the wonderful pieces of art I just feel lucky to behold, but also deserve loads more attention. ~~~I seem to kick off every feature series with food art, so let this be no exception. CakeUpStudio is a relatively new member to our deviantART community. But 5 months in, this wonderful baker from Poland has given our eyes plenty of gems to feast over. Whether it's the attention to detail, or the simple joy that each of her creations exudes, her gallery is a pleasure to browse through.

We wanted to have something that involved collaboration, which can be difficult in a physical medium like Artisan Crafts. So we put our crafty heads together and came up with a way for us to create something together. We're going to craft a cupcake bakery! Here's one we prepared earlier:With the power of photoshop we're going to combine your crafted bakeries and crafted cupcakes into an AC collab of tasty proportions. Here's how it's going to work:Part 1: Craft A BakeryFor the first part of the challenge, we're looking for people to craft the bakery background. You need to create
Artisan Craft and Copyright LawArtisan Craft and Copyright LawAs a Community Volunteer I spend a lot of time pouring through the Artisan Crafts galleries looking for art that deserves a bigger audience. I dig through every little hidden corner of the galleries looking at every type of craft, made by everyone from the most watched members to the day old newbies. And every time I do this, I have to double check it all for originality. My time doing this had shed light on a massive problem inherent in the AC galleries: copyright violationNow, I'm not talking about the obvious I-stole-your-picture-and-uploaded-it violations. I'm talking about something much more subtle, to the point it feels like most of the perpetrators don't actually realise they're doing it. I'm often about to give someone a DD, until I read their description and find it completely devoid of credit. Rather than getting a site-wide feature, these artists end up on my blacklist instead. It all boils dow
More Than What's For DinnerOf all the wonderful aspects of culinary art, the one that gets the least love is often savoury meals. So often we see them written off as happy snaps of what's for dinner, but they are so much more than that.I'm not sure what it is about the savoury that gets shunned so quickly. A dish can be incredibly complex and highly skilled, but it won't get oohed and ahhed at as much as a quick batch of cookies or cupcakes. Maybe we're all dessert lovers at heart? Or maybe we see main meals as more common place? Either way, when we dismiss it we're all missing out on a world of skill and creativity.A lot of the food presented takes many years of honing the skills needed to achieve it. From basic kitchen skills and knife handling, to learning how to cook the ingredients themselves, to then being able to experiment and modify dishes. The food is plated, styled and set up ready to be photographed. Everything from the dish it's served on to the colour of a placemat or the positioning of cutlery i
WingsHumans have used wings and feathers as personal ornamentation for the entirety of our history. In fact, there's evidence that our evolutionary cousins did so as well. It's suggested that this kind of ornamentation may even extend to a common ancestor of both humans and Neanderthals. What has led to our fixation with feathered ornaments is something we'll never know for sure. Do they represent a freedom we terrestrial beings long for when we see our avian friends? Does it come from spiritual or religious reverence? Or is it just because they are so pretty?Whatever drives it today will differ between individuals, but there is no shortage of it in the artistic community. Here are some of the wonderful wing-containing crafts found in the Artisan Craft galleries.

Gallery Descriptions: Artisan Crafts pt. 1Gallery DescriptionsThe Artisan Crafts galleries boast an incredible array of diversity. You'll find everything from incredible sculptures to elegant jewellery, clay food that looks real enough to eat next to food art that looks so realistic you won't believe it's edible. There are a lot of hidden niches among the galleries, so lets explore them all. AnthroThe anthro gallery is dedicated to crafts that depict animals with human-like features. You'll find lots of fursuits in this gallery, alongside anthro masks and props and accessories to match. Architectural ModelsThe little gallery is home to all the physical architectural models and constructs. It's home to a lot of miniaturised versions of buildings, from the hyper-realistic to the whimsical and fantastical. Among them are often models for unique furniture designs as well. Less often, you'll come acros

Celebrating Diversity #31Once again I'm celebrating diversity! Last month I ventured into the Artisan Crafts gallery to find some pretty epic pieces of work. This month I'm wandering into Literature - Prose. The idea behind this series of Articles is for us to step outside of our comfort zones, venture into places we usually ignore because we either don't have the time - or we don't understand them. For me, Literature is a great solace, and I too often forget to wander through the literature gallery here on deviantART. Let's rectify that right now...
Celebrating Diversity HubWelcome to the Celebrating Diversity Hub This is a collection of all the articles that have been posted under this theme. We live in a world full of diversity, every day in real life and every day on dA. And it happens so often that a work of art is "slashed" simply because it is different than others. Because someone sees it and doesn't understand it and doesn't take the time to think about it.People who react like that to art, follow the same thought process, that so many many people follow when it comes to Racism, Sexism, Homophobia: "This is different to me, therefore it must be wrong." You may wonder if that comparison may not be too harsh, but when we open they way for people to condemn what is different in the small things, like in this case Art, we open the path to that thought process taking shape in many more places.Instead of hating on differences, we need to embrace them! Because differences make life so great! We don't want to live in a dull world where everyone think

Forum Features #42 - March: Spring!Once again, the Community Relations team is here to feature the artworks of deviantART's beloved forumers! Once a month, we select one active member from the forums and we feature his or her gallery. This is someone we believe represents the forums well with both good forum-abilities and art.As we're kind (and awesome), we also decided to give an opportunity for everybody to get featured! Every month, we create a thread in the Deviation Thumbshare Forum with a particular theme. This thread is made into a sticky for easy access. All you have to do is post thumbs of your artwork that match the theme and, at the end of the month, we select our favorite thumbs from that thread and feature them in the next news article. The best thing is that being an active member of the forums is the only requirement!Featured Forumer of the Month: Aitheos.
Celebrating Diversity #46Welcome to another installment of Celebrating Diversity in which I put on my camouflage outfit and guard myself with some hot tea to find more amazing art in the parts of deviantART not usually my home. With this disturbing visual, I am pleased to help your minds with this selection af beautiful art! It is both a pleasure and a pain to browse the vast lands that is dA. But the joy of finding something truly remarkable and touching are worth all the things and fill me with a warm cozy feeling of how we are still always trying to make this world a better and more beautiful place The Box Game by DanieDreams
