Pumpkin CarvingHalloween is just around the corner. To celebrate, this week's feature is all about the awesome works of art made from this delicious orange fruit. Some pumpkin carvings are made to be viewed lit up, the image projected being the goal of the carving. Others are made to be viewed by the light of day and are wonderfully detailed sculptures. Lit or not, they're all stunning.
Here's some of my favourites from around the community.

Introduction to Cross StitchingCross Stitching
Cross stitch is one of a number of embroidery stitches, but usually the one most people are familiar with. Whether it was in a school art class or just randomly picking up a cross stitch kit as a kid, a lot of us have tried it at some point. Lets delve into this popular stitch a little bit.
What is a cross stitch?
As the name suggests, is is simply a cross, or an 'X' stitched with thread onto canvas. Typically, it's used to make a picture or a pattern. The stitch will form a complete square, and in this regard it is quite similar to pixel art. Through the placement of individual stitches adjacent to one another, an overall image will eventually appear.
It's an incredibly simple stitch, but can take some time to master. Like many crafts, it can be difficult to notice the
How To Photograph Your CraftsThe absolute number one cause of rejection of DD suggestions for most Artisan Craft CVs is poor photography. There is nothing worse than seeing an otherwise brilliant piece ruined by a dodgy photo. But even beyond DD acceptance, if you want to people on dA to be able to appreciate your skill you need to be able to show your work off to advantage.
Sometimes I'll tell a self-suggester that I can't feature their work because of the quality of the photography and they'll inevitably reply, "Oh, I'll have to get a better camera."
Repeat after me: the tools never make the artist.
You don't need a $9000 sewing machine to stitch a dress, you don't need a $1000 stand mixer to bake a cake, and you similarly don't need a top of the range SLR to take a brilliant photograph. It's all in how you take the photo.
To help us understand photography concepts a little more, Fella is going to help us out. Say hi Fella!
Artists Toolbox: Culinary Art ToolsArtists Toolbox: Culinary Art Tools
To find out more about this educational series, check out the Artists Toolbox Schedule over at projecteducate.
The hardest part of any craft is getting the right tools. You've gotta learn the language of the trade, and that means getting yourself familiar with what's needed where. Culinary arts in particular can be so overwhelming. Most sugar craft books will tell you you need a long list of expensive equipment they'll use to make one type of adornment never to be used again. This can suck a lot of beginners in to spending a fortune on equipment that's not essential. And cake decorating equipment is exorbitantly expensive. I can go buy some lustre dust and a couple of cutters required for one type of flower and kiss $100 goodbye, so knowing when to spend and when not to spend can save you a lot of pain.
I've been building up my
Plated DessertsPlating can be such an underrated art form at times. I've often heard it dismissed as 'boring', 'sterile' and criticised for all looking the same. Maybe we just have a tendency to lust after the rustic, messy desserts. Maybe we like to tear down what is seen as a hoity-toity way of presenting food. Or maybe we just don't see the skill and technique that goes into plating.
Skillful plating up of food requires a good eye, a steady hand and a flair for design. Careful consideration goes into everything from which way the dish is offset, to the type of garnishes on it, to the type of plate it is presented on. It, in turn, necessitates learning a whole host of other skills and techniques to create the garnishes that adorn the dish.
These deviants show off their plating skills with a host of delicious desserts.
October's Artisan Craft Daily DeviationsHere are all the DD's I featured during the month of October.
Don't forget to check out maytel's DD roundup here! maytel's term is ending on the 27th of November (*uglysobbing*), so if you'd like to suggest an Artisan Craft DD to her get in quick before her schedule is completely filled! Be sure to read her DD Guidelines so you know what kind of crafts to suggest.
More Than What's For DinnerOf all the wonderful aspects of culinary art, the one that gets the least love is often savoury meals. So often we see them written off as happy snaps of what's for dinner, but they are so much more than that.
I'm not sure what it is about the savoury that gets shunned so quickly. A dish can be incredibly complex and highly skilled, but it won't get oohed and ahhed at as much as a quick batch of cookies or cupcakes. Maybe we're all dessert lovers at heart? Or maybe we see main meals as more common place? Either way, when we dismiss it we're all missing out on a world of skill and creativity.
A lot of the food presented takes many years of honing the skills needed to achieve it. From basic kitchen skills and knife handling, to learning how to cook the ingredients themselves, to then being able to experiment and modify dishes. The food is plated, styled and set up ready to be photographed. Everything from the dish it's served on to the colour of a placemat or the positioning of cutlery i
PE: Beadwork What is beadwork?
Beadwork is - as the word suggests - working with beads. Beads are very versatile; they come in various colours, shapes and sizes, and together with a needle, some thread or wire, and maybe - but not neccessarily - a (small) loom, you can easily fashion yourself some jewellery, or present your mother with a beaded flower.
What can I create with beads?
That question has a fairly simple answer: Anything you want to! You can make
and other wonderful things.
Uncommon CraftsUncommon Artisan Crafts
Once in a while, I stumble upon a craft so original that it doesn't fit into the usual Artisan Crafts sub-categories. It most often is found under "Other". Of course, this does not mean that it doesn't deserve as much love as a yummy fondant cake or an intricate piece of jewellery It just means that most times this piece is outside of the usual spotlight.
This article is an homage to some of these crafts that are usually unseen and unrecognised I hope you will find something here that you never knew existed and that it will stir up some creative feelings within you.

Culinary ArtsCulinary Arts
Culinary is the art of preparing and/or cooking foods to be as pleasing for the palate as it is for the eye.
Not many types of art can claim to be as nourishing for your soul as they are for your body. Culinary arts is appreciated by everyone in the world because it is highly linked with our survival. Also, if you think about it, it is one of the most accessible forms of art around. You probably even subconsciously practised Culinary Arts several times without knowing it.
Example: someone told you to assemble a plate of cheeses, meats and breads? I'm sure you didn't just throw everything on a plate, somewhere in the back of your mind you styled it to your liking.
Style and photograph your piece
To be able to share your culinary art creations with the rest of the world, you need to be able to photograph it. The way you present your piece is important.
Bad Teachers and Egotistical Jerkwads Good lord, another journal. Well, sometimes I go for a month without writing one, so suffer! :iconinuevillaughplz:
I've been asked about this recently, so thought I'd write about it just in case someone else might relate or find it encouraging.
A lot of people are surprised to hear that I have only been painting since 2011. Well, it's true . I had coloured a few line arts here and there before that, but I never really tried at painting. I was dabbling and just slapping on colour, not bothering to figure out the programs or anything. Because I truly didn't believe I could do it.
Backing up a bit, I'm someone who was a traditional artist. I have been drawing with pencils and paper since I was just a little tyke. Naturally, I wanted everything to do with art in school. :iconhandsomeonionplz:
And that's where this little tale turns dark and mildly depressing :icon0inuscreamplz:

ATB - An alternative to watermarks: MetadataWe have all seen watermarks on images, here on dA and around the internet. And even though they have become a necessary step in the aid of preventing art theft/misuse of art, they are not always ideal. It's really hard to signature or watermark an icon that is 50x50 pixels and still show it off, for example. And even in larger pieces of art, sometimes they just look ugly or, like the watermark option offered by dA, take up too much of the image.
So what is the alternative?
Pro-Animal CraftsToday I felt like making a feature with crafts that donate to animal charities, that search to raise animal welfare awareness and other noble causes. Some of these pieces are for sell and the profits will be donated to shelters and animal charities, so if you find anything interesting don't hesitate to buy it, it's for a good cause. I hope you'll enjoy it!

PE: Site Updates and How to Welcome ThemSite Updates and How to Welcome Them
This article was written due to the recent uproar from some groups of the community because of the new username symbols.
Change is something handled differently by everyone. Some people accustom to change very quickly, others may take a long time or may not adjust to change at all. In regards to deviantART Site Updates, it's important to know ways to welcome change and embrace it. You are not expected to love every feature that is released, but giving it a chance before bashing it is a right step forward.
Before reading on, please note that this article is not directed at any one individual, but as a community as a whole. All views expressed in this article are mine and mine alone and do not reflect the views of deviantART.com.
When a new feature is released, most deviants give their first impressions of said feature. Some may even react like this:

The Penguins movie this year's Trailer comes out, I scream already as I see the beginning of the trailer then LOL and smile wide like a crazy when I see all the video!!
Their personality and models be mixed by "Madagascar" Movie and my favorite TV series "The Penguins of Madagascar"
where you can see their personality and appearance are so much diffrent in two version,
So I treat it as AU, just like "TMNT" has so many different versions and everybody knows they are diffent individuals and souls too.
in The 2014 penguins:
- Skipper's head turn more flat and broad like TV, and his personality seems also turn more like TV too
- Kowalski's eyes turn more emotional and his head turn more

Correcting a name and identityIt was a Winter's afternoon back in 2007 when I gazed at deviantArt for the very first time. I decided to create an account, because hey - why not? I enjoyed creating art, but never did I think it would take me this far. So at the spur of the moment without giving it too much thought, I named myself uniqueLegend.
…And a mistake that haunted me for years was made.
The name "unique" was something that made me slightly cringe whenever I looked at it. In some ways it made me feel like I was someone who enjoyed standing on a pedestal above everyone else. It does not represent me. Just after I created my deviantArt account, I abandoned it for almost two years.
For years on end I had problems accepting the name. And for years on end I had constant thoughts of deleting my account and starting anew. But I was given several Daily Deviations and it felt like it was too late to start again. My artworks were starting to spread on other sites, and my name was being indented. I wanted to accep
