Introduction to Cross StitchingCross Stitching
Cross stitch is one of a number of embroidery stitches, but usually the one most people are familiar with. Whether it was in a school art class or just randomly picking up a cross stitch kit as a kid, a lot of us have tried it at some point. Lets delve into this popular stitch a little bit.
What is a cross stitch?
As the name suggests, is is simply a cross, or an 'X' stitched with thread onto canvas. Typically, it's used to make a picture or a pattern. The stitch will form a complete square, and in this regard it is quite similar to pixel art. Through the placement of individual stitches adjacent to one another, an overall image will eventually appear.
It's an incredibly simple stitch, but can take some time to master. Like many crafts, it can be difficult to notice the
Pumpkin CarvingHalloween is just around the corner. To celebrate, this week's feature is all about the awesome works of art made from this delicious orange fruit. Some pumpkin carvings are made to be viewed lit up, the image projected being the goal of the carving. Others are made to be viewed by the light of day and are wonderfully detailed sculptures. Lit or not, they're all stunning.
Here's some of my favourites from around the community.

Plated DessertsPlating can be such an underrated art form at times. I've often heard it dismissed as 'boring', 'sterile' and criticised for all looking the same. Maybe we just have a tendency to lust after the rustic, messy desserts. Maybe we like to tear down what is seen as a hoity-toity way of presenting food. Or maybe we just don't see the skill and technique that goes into plating.
Skillful plating up of food requires a good eye, a steady hand and a flair for design. Careful consideration goes into everything from which way the dish is offset, to the type of garnishes on it, to the type of plate it is presented on. It, in turn, necessitates learning a whole host of other skills and techniques to create the garnishes that adorn the dish.
These deviants show off their plating skills with a host of delicious desserts.
More Than What's For DinnerOf all the wonderful aspects of culinary art, the one that gets the least love is often savoury meals. So often we see them written off as happy snaps of what's for dinner, but they are so much more than that.
I'm not sure what it is about the savoury that gets shunned so quickly. A dish can be incredibly complex and highly skilled, but it won't get oohed and ahhed at as much as a quick batch of cookies or cupcakes. Maybe we're all dessert lovers at heart? Or maybe we see main meals as more common place? Either way, when we dismiss it we're all missing out on a world of skill and creativity.
A lot of the food presented takes many years of honing the skills needed to achieve it. From basic kitchen skills and knife handling, to learning how to cook the ingredients themselves, to then being able to experiment and modify dishes. The food is plated, styled and set up ready to be photographed. Everything from the dish it's served on to the colour of a placemat or the positioning of cutlery i
Disability Awareness Day :: Braille Art FeatureToday is Disability Awareness Day. It offers us a chance to promote awareness and understanding, as well as a moment to reflect on the lives of individuals living with a disability, and what those of us blessed with able bodies can do to assist.
There are a number of articles coming to you from CVs and members alike aiming to spread awareness on the matter, so I won't double up on their efforts. But I want to take a moment to reiterate that not all disabilities are visible. Lately I've heard a lot of stories from people using disabled parking being abused by passers by, either verbally or via a note left on their dash, for not 'looking' disabled. It's a common theme. People will tend to judge the heath of another by how they look, but it is worth remembering that not all sick people look sick. The vast majority of disabilities are those you cannot see by looking at a person.
Some people live with chronic pain. Ot
How To Photograph Your CraftsThe absolute number one cause of rejection of DD suggestions for most Artisan Craft CVs is poor photography. There is nothing worse than seeing an otherwise brilliant piece ruined by a dodgy photo. But even beyond DD acceptance, if you want to people on dA to be able to appreciate your skill you need to be able to show your work off to advantage.
Sometimes I'll tell a self-suggester that I can't feature their work because of the quality of the photography and they'll inevitably reply, "Oh, I'll have to get a better camera."
Repeat after me: the tools never make the artist.
You don't need a $9000 sewing machine to stitch a dress, you don't need a $1000 stand mixer to bake a cake, and you similarly don't need a top of the range SLR to take a brilliant photograph. It's all in how you take the photo.
To help us understand photography concepts a little more, Fella is going to help us out. Say hi Fella!
Remembrance Day Feature
They shall not grown old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.
The above is an extract from a poem called "For the Fallen" and was written in 1914 by Laurence Binyon. London-born Binyon wrote it 7 weeks after the outbreak of World War 1. British newspapers teemed with the news of the dead who'd fallen in battle, and it was against the backdrop of these bleak days that he wrote this poem. This verse, known today as The Ode for the Returned and Services League [RSL], has been recited at all military commemoration services for almost the last century. 'Lest we forget' is usually intoned at the end as a mark or respect and gratitude for those who served.
There are two such services for which we most associate this poem with: ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. Today is, of course, the latter.
Remembrance day is he

This article was written due to the recent uproar from some groups of the community because of the new username symbols.

In regards to deviantART Site Updates, it's important to know ways to welcome change and embrace it. Successful Stamps - How ToSuccessful Stamps
Learn how to command the masses through well thought-out stamps.
written by miontre for Community Week in projecteducate
Stamps are small (usually 99 x 56 px) images used on deviantART to express an opinion, share an interest, give personal facts, show support for something, or anything similar. Stamps are usually funny, but many can be controversial or serious too. By using the thumbcode, deviants can paste stamps onto their profiles or into their journals where it serves the same purpose as the creator of the stamp initially made it to.
Stamps can become quite popular quite quickly, and even after their peak continue to see comments and favourites coming in due to their viral nature (people share them which leads other people to see them). Many deviants find their stamps taking the top spots in their gallery's popularity ranking!
However, if they aren't made well, stamps won't be s

Hath No FearGiving yourself completely up to fear is kinda like falling in love: You can't pin point exactly when it started and by the time you realize that you are surrounded by that sensation it's already game over. Just like the image of the person you are in love with starts creeping out from every unexpected corner, fear never leaves your side when you give it a welcome stay. After a restless sleep, it starts beating anxiously in your heart the moment you wake up in the morning and commands all your thoughts and actions throughout the day. It is nothing short of a prison, except you are the only inmate and the warden never takes a break. Ever.
I do not exactly remember when I let fear occupy my being but I remember the exact moment when I realized I was ruled by it. It was late in the afternoon, everybody was out there 'getting busy living' and I had locked myself inside my bed half awake, not particularly finding any valid reason to get out of it. Then I was awakened from a nightmare by my
